House Rules, Variants, and Replays
This page contains the house rules I or the group I play with
came up for a number of games, usually to fix some perceived problem
regarding play balance or (usually) historicity, as well as a number
of variants and replays I wrote over time. Material added as time
permits.
Note: All materials on this page related to Clash of Arms products (e.g., Landships, Campaigns of Robert E. Lee, Army of the Heartland, Summer Storm) have been removed, in protest of Clash's policy of charging extra for PDF rulebooks.
- Abensberg (S&T 113): Major variant for better historical feel, with fixed OOB and setups.
- Advanced Tobruk (Critical Hit): Scenario sizes (includes Wavell's 30,000).
- Air & Armor (West End): Artillery markers (remove the need for FIRED markers; just put aside when used): plain, with target symbol (PDF). Short replays (posted on consimworld). Short Comparison to Tac Air (AH).
- Air Cav (West End): Correction.
- Albion (Ares 11): Replay of the "Albion Alone" scenario (ASCII version).
- Ancient Wars Series (S&T): House Rules. See also Roman Civil War for a replay.
- At All Hazards (Ivy Street): Variant Counters (300 dpi) and 200 dpi.
- Barbarossa to Berlin (GMT): Anybody
else hate GMT's bland and unfunctional sticks-and-boxes maps? Here's
the answer: an area map for B2B, topologically equivalent. Full Size Version (200dpi, 4MB), Sneak Peek JPG (100KB), Sneak Peek TIF (1078KB, a bit more
crisp to look at).
- Battleship (Simulations Canada): House Rules, Record Sheet.
- Campaigns of Napoleon Series (Kevin Zucker): Guillaume Daudin's variant CRT. Shouldn't get on the table without this.
- Civil War Brigade Series (The Gamers/MMP): House Rules.
- Desert Steel (West End): See the Tank Leader page.
- Dresden 1813 (NES): Major variant for better historical feel.
- Eastern Front Tank Leader (West End): See the Tank Leader page.
- Eckmuehl (S&T 114): Major variant for better historical feel, with fixed OOB and setups.
- Eylau (Eagles of the Empire series,
Avalanche Press): Best history per hour ratio I have seen among Napoleonic games. Historical variant and
analysis (PDF file), Replay (original ASCII file), Cavalry Charge House Rule.
- Flight Leader: Colour information markers for control sheets: Red and Blue, Green and Gray.
- Four Lost Battles (OSG): Major variant for better historical feel.
- Friedland (Eagles of the Empire series): Replay (original ASCII file).

Game

- Napoleon at Leipzig (Clash of Arms): Major variant for better historical feel, Artillery breakdown counters for 2nd and 3rd ed.
- Napoleon at Luetzen (3W): Counters colour-coded by formation. Front, Back.
- Napoleon's Last Battles (SPI, TSR, DG): Major variant for better historical feel, Artillery breakdown counters for the DG edition.

Game
- Pacific War (VG): All my stuff about this game is collected on the Pacific War page
- Panzer Grenadier (Avalanche): Afrika Korps scenario sizes, scenario sizes sorted by size. Note: detailed individual scenario descriptions at http://www.thewargamer.com.
- Perfidious Albion Magazine: Game index (PDF Version, Word Version)
- Prussia's Glory (GMT): Condensed Rules
(PDF file).
- Roman Civil War (S&T 157): House Rules, Campaign game replay.
- Seven Seas to Victory (XTR): House Rules.
- Shogun Triumphant (XTR): Replay.
- Solferino (Vae Victis): Redone counters in the NLC/Age of Rifles style (A4 PDF): front, front.
- Solomon Sea (Simulations Workshop): Additional Material for my own game.
- Struggle of Nations: Guillaume Daudin's variant CRT. Shouldn't get on the table without this. Note that as pointed out long ago in the AH GENERAL 19-5, the attrition rules in SoN are too harsh to replicate the historical moves. Have not had time to find a fix for this.
- Tac Air (AH): Rules Summary (Text and PDF). Note: includes some simple house rules that fix the issues that most people complain about. Short Comparison to Air & Armor (West End Games).
- Tank Leader (West End): The best platoon level armor game ever, still decades ahead of Panzerblitz, Panzer Grenadier, Blood & Thunder, Nations at War, and all others I've seen. Another John Hill masterpiece. The Tank Leader page.
- Vector 3 (SPI): Record Sheet.
- Western Front Tank Leader (West End): See the the Tank Leader page.
- Winter Storm (Vanguard): Special Rules with incorporated errata, New map (PDF), new counters (PDF). Beta version, ready for use.
