Important course requirement
For the W26/27 semester, grading will be different from previous years. The course includes a mandatory written pen-and-paper exam. The exam is closed book, and passing it is required to pass the course, with no exceptions.

Course Description
This course studies the foundations of database query languages and the principles that make queries expressive, comparable, and efficiently evaluable. Topics include:
- Database theory foundations and query languages
- The relational model and relational query languages
- Datalog, recursion, and queries over hierarchical or graph-shaped data
- Conjunctive queries and their structural properties
- Query expressiveness, equivalence, and Ehrenfeucht-Fraïssé games
- Complexity of query answering
- Worst-case optimal join algorithms
